Top 3 Places to Get Insurance as an Athletic Trainer

As healthcare providers, there is absolutely no reason why we should be working without insurance.

Why? Because it protects service-providing individuals like yourself & companies from bearing the cost of defending against an act, omission, negligence claim, or other damages against a client.

We need to be smart by protecting ourselves and not be naive by assuming nothing will ever happen so in this blog we’re sharing our top 3 places to get insurance as an athletic trainer.

We encourage you to explore the options listed above and shop around for the best price. When shopping for a policy, be sure to:

  • Select the proper work type (employed vs self-employed)
  • Select often you will be doing this work (part-time or full-time)
  • Check to see if “Athletic Trainer” is an option as any alternative profession, no matter how similar, is not acceptable.

Here are some other things to know:

  • A policy provided by your employer may or may not cover you so rely upon yourself by purchasing your own policy.
  • What to look for in an insurance policy: $1 million/ $3 million limits. The first number represents the cost that will be covered per incident, while the second number indicates the total cost that would be covered for all claims. License protection, Sexual Misconduct/ Abuse, and Information Privacy Act all typically carry $25,000 limits.
  • Do you do any kind of educational work (blogging, sharing on social media, consulting)… ask if they will add a “rider” for additional protection. Most can do this at little to no cost.

Remember, there is very little you can do to prevent yourself from being named in a lawsuit. These protections are in place in case you are ever accused, not whether you actually broke a law, because no one has a more vested interest in your career than YOU!
