Interprofessional Interviews: Marti Reed

Marti Reed comes to us as a National Championship winning softball player at UCLA who has leveraged her athletic skills and applying them to life. She recently published her first book, Utility Player Life, where she discusses how to translate skills that were learned on the field/ court to help grow and develop in life beyond sports. Marti was chosen as an interviewee because while she had personal relationships with athletic trainers, she could translate this into larger life lessons.

The four primary topics she discusses in her book are:

  1. Strength of Character
  2. Flexibility in Opportunity
  3. Stamina in Creating
  4. Habits Sportsmanship in Life

The overall discussion is directed at how we each can work on the small things in life, that culminate into much larger outcomes for us. With each of the above mentioned characteristics, Marti describes how they show up in the life of individuals and athletic trainers. She emphasizes the importance of showing up for others, having self discipline, and navigating opportunities in life.

Interprofessional Interviews

This interview series is aimed at bringing awareness to the athletic trainer’s role in the larger sport and healthcare market. Understanding outside professionals’ views of athletic training and also hearing about their unique roles will allow us to practice more globally while expanding our awareness of the greater market we operate in. Moreover, there is a CAATE education update for the 2020 standards that places a large emphasis on how to work, communicate, understand, and grow alongside other professionals. We hope that these interviews will be one way for athletic trainers to gain access and participate in this discussion with various industries. Though we have become really great at talking to each other, it’s time we expand this conversation to include others.
