Cultural Competence Resources for Athletic Trainers

As a result of the activities that occurred over summer 2020 in respect to racial relations and the treatment of BIPOC, we found it necessary to use our platform to discuss diversity, equality, and inclusion in healthcare.

Below you will find resources, associations, and research on cultural competence specifically athletic trainers.

Resources:

  • The AT Last Podcast: Sports medicine practitioners recognizing, addressing, and catalyzing change within their spheres of influence. Hosts Adam Cady, Christopher Bates, and Kristen Ross focus specifically on the issue of “race” in America, its disparaging impact on our society, and how that is reflected within the world of athletic training.
  • Mind the Gap: A Handbook to raise awareness of how symptoms and signs can present differently on darker skin as well as highlighting the different language that needs to be used in descriptors.
  • NABJ Style Guide: NABJ statement on capitalizing Black and other racial identifiers, and a guide providing the ability to look up a wide variety of specific words/terms to help determine appropriate usage.
